NVDO – Compromised BCAA metabolism in humans with non-alcoholic fatty liver and/or type 2 diabetes is not affected by a 12-week exercise program

Froukje Vanweert presented during the NVDO with her research on compromised BCAA metabolism in humans with non-alcoholic fatty liver and/or type 2 diabetes. Although the association between systemic BCAA and IHL, exercise training-induced reduction in IHL seemed not to be related to changes in BCAA. To conclude, moderate to high physical activity and exercise training seem not to be effective strategies to improve BCAA metabolism in metabolically compromised people.

NVDO – Skeletal muscle in humans exhibits a day-night rhythm in lipid droplets and in the muscle lipidome

Jan-Frieder Harmsen presented his data on the day-night rhythm in lipid droplets and in the muscle lipidome found in skeletal muscle in humans. He showed that myocellular lipid content and whole muscle lipid composition vary across the day-night cycle under normal living conditions. Day-night rhythmicity was present in over half of diacylglycerol (DAG) lipid species. Future studies are needed to investigate whether rhythmicity in DAG is functionally related to insulin sensitivity and how this mi...

PhD Conferral of Jakob Wefers today

Today, our colleague Jakob Wefers will defend his thesis "Day-Night Rhythmicity in Muscle Metabolism and Metabolic Health". One of his articles focusses on how circadian misalignment induces fatty acid metabolism gene profiles and compromises insulin sensitivity in human skeletal muscle. Read the complete article here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29987027 Abstract Circadian misalignment, such as in shift work, has been associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, direct...

World Diabetes Day

Yesterday was World Diabetes Day. It marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin 98 years ago. This year's theme is "Diabetes: protect your family". The first step to preventing type 2 diabetes is knowing your risk. More information about World Diabetes Day can be found here: https://worlddiabetesday.org.

More and more children get grown-up diseases, why?

Toddlers with type 2 diabetes, 8-year-olds with high blood pressure, teenagers with constipation: why do more and more children suffer from major human disease - and their medicines? "Sick before their time", that is how American media summarize the trend that has held that country in its grip for some time. Patrick Schrauwen, professor of metabolic aspects of type 2 diabetes at Maastricht UMC predicts that "We will see the problems increase here". https://www.volkskrant.nl/wetenschap/steeds-me...
