Dzhansel Hashim was born in May 14th 1998 in Haskovo, Bulgaria. In 2017 she started her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Manchester in the UK. Her bachelor degree had a major focus on molecular biology and during her thesis she investigated the effects of ultraviolet radiation on RINT1 protein expression in human fibroblasts. Subsequently, she decided to pursue her interest in lifestyle interventions and how we can use them to achieve health. She started her master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Maastricht University with a specialisation in nutrition, physical activity and metabolism. During the internship, she focused on the effects of short-term cold acclimation with shivering on the glucose homeostasis in overweight/obese individuals.
In August 2022, Dzhansel started her PhD at the department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Joris Hoeks and Prof. Patrick Schrauwen. During her PhD, Dzhansel will further investigate the effects cold-induced shivering thermogenesis on the glucose homeostasis in pre-diabetic individuals, as well as patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
