Kay Roumans receives Junior Fellowship from the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation

Kay Roumans was granted a Junior Fellowship by the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation. With this, he wants to develop a new MRS technique to measure hepatic gluconeogenesis non-invasively and in real-time. It is possible that people with prediabetes produce more sugars at night, which prevents the body from switching to fat oxidation. This may play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Kay will therefore investigate whether overnight hepatic gluconeogenesis is indeed increased in people with prediabetes, and whether reducing it helps to improve metabolic health. This may contribute to the development of therapies to prevent type 2 diabetes.
