Sabine Daemen started the Bachelor Biomedical Sciences in 2009 at Maastricht University, with the specialization Molecular Life Sciences, from which she graduated cum laude in 2012. During her studies she received the Top 3% award, awarded to the 3% best students of Maastricht University, in two consecutive years. She continued with the Master Biomedical Sciences at Maastricht University and received her degree in 2014. During the first year of her Master, she did an internship at the Department of Internal Medicine at Maastricht University under supervision of Prof. Casper Schalkwijk, investigating the effects of pyridoxamine on obesity and insulin resistance, with special focus to the adipose tissue. During the second year of her Master she did an internship at the Department of Human Biology at Maastricht University under supervision of Dr. Joris Hoeks, during which the main goal was to identify microRNAs that are involved in the regulation of mitochondrial oxidative capacity in skeletal muscle, resulting in her Master thesis. She was granted a PhD position through the NWO NUTRIM Graduate Program at the Department of Human Movement Sciences at Maastricht University, under supervision of Prof. Matthijs Hesselink. Since September 2014 she is working on her research project entitled ‘Droplets preventing the overflow; PLIN5-coated lipid droplets in insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function’. This project aimed at unraveling the connections between lipid droplets, PLIN5, mitochondrial function and insulin sensitivity through the use of state-of-the-art microscopic techniques.
