Nynke van Polanen

Nynke van Polanen was born on June 7th, 1990 in Almere, the Netherlands. She studied Nutrition and Health at the Wageningen University in Wageningen. During her Bachelor thesis, she did a literature study on the relation between ADHD and the infant gut microbiota. After her Bachelor, she started a two-year Master program Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology at the Wageningen University. She performed her master thesis in Jaap Keijer’s lab at the Human and Animal Physiology department in Wageningen. She investigated the effect of silencing Mfn1 and Dnm1l on mitochondrial dynamics and related mitochondrial functioning in C2C12 myoblasts. For her internship, Nynke traveled to the United States and performed biomedical research in Dallas at the Philipp Scherer’s lab, Touchstone Diabetic Center, University of Texas Southwestern. She investigated the effects of adiponectin on tubular epithelial cell metabolism in mice.

In September 2016 she started her PhD at the Department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences under supervision of prof. Hesselink. During her PhD, she studied lipid droplet metabolism in the muscle, using laser scanning confocal microscopy, and mitochondrial functioning in relation to insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular diseases.
