Evelyn was born in 1988 in Melbourne, Australia. She completed her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin University in 2009 before setting her focus on skeletal muscle health. In 2010 Evelyn completed an honours degree in Exercise and Sport Science and started a PhD project in 2011 with Professor Aaron Russell. Evelyn’s PhD project consisted of a microRNA screen in the muscle of young and older individuals following a bout of resistance exercise. This screen together with extensive testing in human primary muscle cell cultures allowed Evelyn to identify two microRNAs that are potentially important in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis. Evelyn was awarded her PhD in 2016 for the thesis titled ‘The role of microRNAs in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis’.

Since completing her PhD, Evelyn has worked on various research projects, further developing her research skills. Evelyn spent 6 months at La Trobe University under the supervision of Associate Professor Robyn Murphy where she further developed her skills in protein expression techniques and single cell analyses. Evelyn then returned to Deakin University to manage a human clinical trial that is investigating the effects of sleep deprivation on muscle protein synthesis under the supervision of Associate Professor Bradley Aisbett and Dr Severine Lamon. During this time Evelyn also worked with Professor Aaron Russell on a project that was investigating the regulation of brown adipocyte differentiation.

In early 2017 Evelyn moved to Maastricht, Netherlands, to commence a postdoctoral position in the Department of Human Biology at Maastricht University. Together with Associate Professor Joris Hoeks, Professor Patrick Schrauwen and the team, Evelyn worked to contribute to the current body of knowledge in the area of mitochondrial function and microRNAs.
