Dr. Ciarán Fealy received a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2009 from the University of Limerick in Ireland and subsequently earned a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Kent State University, Ohio in 2016 for the dissertation “Insulin Resistance and Obesity: Targeting the molecular mechanisms of metabolic disease”. Throughout his PhD, he performed research at the Lerner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinic under the mentorship of Dr. John Kirwan, where he remained for a further 2-years as a postdoctoral fellow before moving to Maastricht University. He has developed a translational research career examining the molecular mechanisms related to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, NAFLD, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and aging. Current research topics include mitochondrial dynamics, function, and membrane composition in aging and circadian rhythms, and ER-Mitochondria crosstalk in skeletal muscle in skeletal muscle metabolism. For his research, Dr. Fealy utilizes cell-, animal- and human models and he has several national and international collaborations with leading scientists in the field.
